Airbrush Techniques, 69 Camaro Door

I just sent my car door off to the body shop. I was asked how to find a good body shop. I have used local shops and have always had friends refer me. You can go visit a shop and look at the quality of work they have done. Check to see that the spray booth or room is set up with proper ventilation and dust free. Test your paints on a sample piece of metal and have the shop do a clear coat trial piece for you.

I can't wait to get the door back. The clear coat makes the colors look so deep you could fall into the painting like Alice in wonderland.

Airbrush Techniques, 69 Camaro Door

So I chug along with the skeletal details. It is very hard to get a good shot on this door without a glare. I continue to go back and forth with black and white to carve out the details. Once i get
it just right I will add a translucent yellow and brown to give the bones their natural color. I am totally freehand spraying this piece. It feels good to get back to that. It feels like drawing with
your pencil in the air. You just have to remember not to grip the brush to tight, and let your eyes look at the image your are drawing, not the door surface. It is kind of like drawing with a light
saber, you have to trust the force, or in this case, the lines your eye is observing. It is contour line drawing with an airbrush.  I am using an anatomy book to model my bones.

Now I am putting some color into the skulls and bones. I make the shadows blue and purple. When I add a little yellow to the bones the blue and purple will make them pop out in extreme 3D. Each layer of color adds more detail to the scene. ...<< MORE >>
